So today we rented some slightly better kayaks from Brookbank London, and set off on the River Lea for the first time!
The weather was scorching, and the Essex surroundings were (surprisingly) much nicer than those of Camden! For the first time we have to navigate locks… however, rather than trying to be heroes (and probably breaking British Waterways law) by paddling through the locks, we had to carry our kayaks out of the water and around each one before dropping them in on the other side.
This was fairly tiring, and also lead to a few near-misses with the numerous exits and re-entrys. We made it all the way to Picketts Lock and back, 8.2miles, in 2hrs10mins (3.78mph).
Generally very happy with today’s paddle… But yet to try a tandem to see if we can get our speed up!!
